Neema's Interview

We weren’t able to interview Neema because she lives in Tanzania, a country on the eastern coast of Africa. She doesn’t use a computer so we couldn’t email her and ask her questions. Instead here are a few notes from our photographer Mary’s visit to meet Neema in Tanzania.

Neema is 11 years old in her book. She has a learning disability. She lives in an orphanage which is a place children live who don’t have families to take care of them. Her friend Joseph is 12 years old. Neema is social and welcoming to all visitors. She speaks English and Swahili.

Neema likes to help take care of younger children. She helps feed them and she also does laundry. Her book shows other ways she helps.

When Neema goes to school she wears a uniform. It is a Saturday in her book so she is wearing clothes she chose. Young women can go to Neema’s school and learn to become childcare workers. Her school is important in Tanzania because it gives young women a way to get an education and a job.
